The construction of the observatory
The site preparation is complete.
Work begins to make the foundation.
The outer part of the concrete foundation is
complete. The base ring will sit on this part,
which is 10cm thicker than the rest of the
foundation to withstand the weight of the
dome.
The concrete foundation is complete. The
whole at the centre is where the telescope
mounting sits.
The central hole is filled with concrete but
separated by a thin rubber sheeting from the
rest of the foundation to minimise vibration to
the telescope mounting.
The lower base ring is laid on the foundation.
The upper base ring, which rotates on the
wheels on the lower base ring, is installed.
The original 18-inch (46cm) telescope
